As hurricane Milton approaches, it's natural to feel overwhelmed, especially with the threat of storm surges, wind, and heavy rain.
But don’t panic—preparing early ensures your dog stays safe, whether you're hunkering down or evacuating. Have these preparations done by tonight. ( Tuesday Oct. 8)
I’ve seen firsthand how a calm, well-prepared owner can make all the difference for keeping their pet SAFE during emergencies, especially after Helene. Take this seriously, have these supplies ready even if you plan to hunker down. (PLEASE EVACUATE YOUR FAMILY IF YOU ARE ZONE A, B & C OR IN A MOBILE HOME)
Urgent Checklist: Essential Dog Supplies for the Hurricane
1. Collar with ID Tags
Make sure your dog is wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags right now. Include your phone number so they can be quickly returned if separated.
2. Leash and Harness
Keep these items near the door or in your travel bag to avoid scrambling last minute. They’re essential for moving your dog safely.
3. Food & Water (at least 5-7 days’ worth)
Pack plenty of food and water. If you’re evacuating, bring collapsible bowls for easy feeding.
4. Medications & Vet Records
Pack any medications your dog takes and put them in a waterproof bag along with their vet records, including proof of vaccinations.
5. Crate or Carrier
Having a secure space for your dog can reduce stress. Make sure it's sturdy and easily transportable.
6. Comfort Items
Bring their favorite blanket or toy to help soothe anxiety. Familiar smells can be very calming during chaotic times.
7. Waste Bags & Puppy Pads
In case your dog can't get outside during the storm, have puppy pads on hand. Also, pack enough waste bags for when they can.
8. First Aid Kit
A pet first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers is a must-have in case of any injuries.
9. Photos of Your Dog
Keep a current picture on hand, in case you need to show it to others to help find your dog in the event of separation.
10. Emergency Shelter Information
Check if your evacuation destination is pet-friendly, or locate nearby shelters that will accept pets.
Keeping Your Dog Calm During Milton- Quick Tips
Exercise before the storm: A tired dog is a calmer dog. Take them for a long walk or play fetch to burn off energy.
Keep a routine: Stick to feeding and bathroom breaks as close to their usual schedule as possible to provide a sense of normalcy.
Provide comfort items: Use a cozy blanket and their favorite toy or a Peanut butter stuffed Kong to keep them busy.
Try calming chews: Use soothing chews or anxiety supplements to help reduce stress.
Stay calm yourself: Your dog picks up on your energy, so stay calm and reassuring.
Create a safe space: Set up a quiet, cozy spot where your dog can relax during the storm.
Stay Calm but Act Quickly
Dogs can pick up on our anxiety. Take a deep breath, gather your supplies, and stay focused. The quicker you prepare, the calmer you and your dog will be when it’s time to act.
Remember: It’s better to over-prepare than to scramble at the last minute. Secure your home, secure your dog, and stay safe out there!
